Getting Started with Bachata
Bachata is one of the most accessible Latin dances to learn. Its basic step pattern is simple and repetitive, making it perfect for beginners. All you need is a willingness to move and a love for music!
The Basic Step
The Bachata basic step consists of 4 counts: three steps and a tap (or hip movement on beat 4). The pattern goes: step left, step together, step left, tap/hip – then repeat to the right. This side-to-side motion is the foundation of all Bachata dancing.
The Hip Movement
What makes Bachata unique is the characteristic hip movement on beat 4. As you tap your foot, allow your hip to naturally rise on the same side. This gives Bachata its sensual, flowing quality. Don't force it – let it happen naturally as you relax into the music.
Partner Connection
Bachata is danced in a close embrace with a partner. The lead (traditionally the man) guides the follow (traditionally the woman) through gentle pressure and body movement. Communication through touch is key – stay relaxed, listen to your partner, and enjoy the connection.
